Fan Reactions To David Corenswet’s Superman Suit Are Divisive

On May 6, Co-chairman and Co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn, revealed our first look at David Corenswet as Superman fully suited up.

The Superman suit gained a lot of attention online, but not the kind WB/DC was expecting. The overwhelming majority response seems to argue that the suit is ‘uninspired’ and ‘unimaginative,’ with some fans comparing it to Gunn’s previous ‘cheap’ costumes from ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy.’

Though all fans can’t be impressed unanimously, industry professionals joined the conversation as well. An unsatisfactory response from Zack Snyder’s second unit director on ‘Man of Steel,’ Clay Staub, took to X/Twitter to share his initial thoughts:

“Who thought this was the best option for a First Look?

Really, I’m not joking, speaking solely from the layout perspective, the pose (pulling his boot on) making the suit chest and arms look bulky and rubbery.”

Staub went on to clarify his words by adding that his take was not a shot at Corenswet or the movie itself:

“But the Suit and the Man are One! BTW – I’m not commenting on the Actor or Story, it could be Great. I’m just looking at the layout and the takeaway. If the metaphor is the New Man/New Suit or Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps…then both failed.”

The costume reveal is only the first step in relaunching a new catalog of DC films, and surely more character reveals from ‘Superman’ will be shown in the coming months. Corenswet’s reveal as Superman was always going to be the most divisive, as many fans are still sore over Henry Cavill’s abrupt exit from the role — one week after Warner Bros and DC announced his return after a multiple year absence.

Comparisons have already been made between Corenswet and Cavill’s reveals, stating that Cavill’s first-look as Superman was far superior.

One fan reaction to Corenswet’s suit is as follows: "MCU lowest common denominator crud.” Now begins the ride of convincing Henry Cavill Superman fans to enter the theatre to see the new iteration, and earn their support for the new DCU.

On the more positive side, one fan tweeted: “WE DID IT BOYS… THE RED TRUNKS IS BAAAAAACK.”

With the latest Superman reveal, Cavill fans’ grief over losing their much admired Superman seems to have amplified.

Gunn is serving as both writer and director for the film simply titled: ‘Superman’ (previously titled ‘Superman: Legacy’).

The film releases in theatres on July 11, 2025.
