Apple Original Films' latest release, ‘The Gorge,’ directed by Scott Derrickson and produced by Skydance, has set a new record as the most successful film debut on the streaming service.
The film stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as rival guardians stationed at a watchtower above a mysterious gorge. Their long-distance relationship unfolds into a perilous journey to uncover the truth about mysterious creatures residing below.
‘The Gorge’ surpassed previous records held by the film ‘Wolfs,’ directed by Jon Watts and featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, which had switched from a wide theatrical release to a limited cinema and global streaming strategy last fall.
While Apple does not release precise viewership figures, the company has confirmed that ‘The Gorge’ is the biggest premiere in the history of Apple TV+, contributing to double-digit growth in global subscribers and a significant 80% increase in new viewers the weekend following its release on February 14. This news follows a report by Deadline that ‘Severance’ overtook ‘Ted Lasso’ as the most-watched series on Apple TV+.
Matt Dentler, head of features at Apple Original Films, expressed enthusiasm about the film's success, highlighting the unique and creative world crafted by Derrickson that has pulled-in global viewership:
“It’s been a thrill for all of us at Apple to see the unforgettably original and inventive world Scott has created with ‘The Gorge’ resonate in such a massive way with audiences around the globe,” said Dentler. “Embarking on this immensely fun, genre-melding ride with our partners at Skydance has been an absolute joy, and we can’t wait to watch as even more fans discover the on-screen movie magic of Miles and Anya’s captivating performances.”
‘The Gorge’ features Teller and Taylor-Joy as highly skilled operatives who develop a romantic bond amidst their mission to protect the world from unseen dangers within the gorge. The script was penned by Zach Dean, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and members of Crooked Highway, including Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, Sherryl Clark, along with Dean, Adam Kolbrenner, and Greg Goodman producing. Miles Teller also serves as an executive producer on the film.
