Sophie Thatcher Talks Influence Of ‘Heretic’ Co-Star Hugh Grant At TIFF 2024: “I’ve Learned So Much From That Guy”
The red carpet was in full swing for A24’s latest horror ‘Heretic.’ The film stars leads Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as two young missionaries, who knock on the wrong door and are trapped by Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant, a crazed recluse who believes control is the one true religion.
The film is directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods from their original screenplay.
Thatcher was the first to speak with Top Film, and had nothing but high praise for British icon Hugh Grant.
“I feel like I’ve learned… I’ve learned a lot from that guy over there [points to Hugh Grant, three spots down the press line] — he can probably hear me!” said the film’s lead Sophie Thatcher. “He’s fantastic. He was always trying new things. And I learned to not always stick to the same way of doing a scene — he was always trying new ways. It’s really interesting to watch from such a well-seasoned actor.”
Shortly after Sophie Thatcher made her way to the auditorium, Hugh Grant stepped up to briefly speak with Top Film, and gave his thoughts on the acting process for ‘Heretic.’
“I’ve learned the same lesson which is: try to relax and trust yourself,” Hugh Grant said. “Invent it in the moment without pre-rehearsing anything.”
The film delves into themes of religious conviction and manipulation, with Grant's performance as a sinister antagonist receiving widespread acclaim. "Heretic" has been praised for its intense atmosphere and thought-provoking dialogue, solidifying A24's reputation for delivering compelling horror narratives
