Box Office: ‘Furiosa’ With Record Low Numbers, ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Earns No. 4 Spot, ‘Garfield’ To Beat New Mad Max Epic

For the long weekend Memorial Day box office, legendary filmmaker George Miller’s ‘Furiosa,’ the film with rave reviews from both fans and critics alike, the film that follows the juggernaut multi-Oscar winning film ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ seems to be failing at the box office.

‘Furiosa’ is on track for $31 million to $33 million total for this weekend (domestic). This makes it the lowest Memorial Day opening in decades. The last time films grossed in similar spectrums was way back in 1980s with ‘Return of the Jedi’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.’

Based on weekend numbers, George Miller‘s ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is likely to be taken over by ‘The Garfield Movie’ in the coming days at the box office. ‘Furiosa’ grossed $10.2 million on Friday from 3,804 theaters, versus $8.4 million for ‘Garfield’ from 4,035 locations.

‘Furiosa’ was expected to open to $40 million to $45 million for the four-day holiday but instead turned into the latest summer blockbuster to underperform.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ is currently playing in 3,550 theaters and looks to come in No. 4 for the weekend, with an estimated four-day gross of $15.5 million to $16 million for 20th Century and Disney. The film is nearing $300 million worldwide and is likely to earn this number after the long weekend.

The Fall Guy’ can now be considered a box office flop, but it’s estimated three-day result of $5.7 million marks a drop of just 32% percent from 2,955 locations. The film is now available on VOD.

The month of May has been a tough start to the summer season as the box office continues to struggle. To zero surprise, Marvel Studios’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is sure to be the biggest hit of the summer as they’ve already broken pre-sale records for an R-rated movie (releasing July 26).

As far as ‘Furiosa’ is concerned, we can only hope it performs in the same ballpark as ‘Fury Road’ — just shy of $380 million worldwide. After all, ‘Furiosa’ is great, and we’re desperate to see George Miller’s next Mad Max project greenlit titled; ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland.’
