Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ is rapidly approaching $1 billion at the global box office, as it grossed a record-shattering $100 million domestically and $164.4 million overseas in its second weekend — finishing Sunday with $724.4 million worldwide. The film is officially the top-grossing film of the year, surpassing the juggernaut sci-fi epic ‘Dune: Part Two’ ($711 million globally).

The animated feature tackles complex emotions that inhabit a 13-year-old girl (the character of Riley), and the changes that come with life at that age. Through its emotional and approachable narrative, ‘Inside Out 2’ joins an elite club of movies that have earned $90 million or more in their second weekend at the domestic box office.

‘Inside Out 2’ enjoyed the biggest sophomore outing of any animated film domestically and the seventh-biggest of any film, behind box office elites such as installments in the Avengers, Star Wars and Jurassic World series.

‘Inside Out 2’ stands at $355.2 million domestically, while raking in $369.4 million overseas — with the film yet to open in major markets.

The film is already a monumental achievement for Disney’s animated department and sparks a major comeback for Pixar, as they anticipate the film reaching $1 billion within the next two weekends.
