‘Despicable Me 4’ Dominates With $122M Opening, ‘MaXXXine’ Lands In 4th Place With $6.7 Million
Illumination and Universal’s animated Minions franchise continues to dominate at the box office with a fourth instalment in the ‘Despicable Me’ series, with a five-day domestic opening of $122.6 million from 4,428 theaters.
The film hit expectations despite being the sixth project in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time. Film recently surpassed $230 million overseas.
‘Despicable Me 4’ grossed $75 million — marking the highest July 4 opener since Illumination’s ‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ collected $107 million in 2022, and earned a grand total of $940 million worldwide.
Steve Carell returns as fan favorite Gru, and ushers in a new era of Minions mayhem with Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier and Madison Pola) welcome a new troublemaking son, Gru Jr. (Tara Strong).
The movie marks a back-to-back win for the animated family-film marketplace after Pixar / Disney’s ‘Inside Out 2’ fell to second place in its fourth weekend, and joined the billion-dollar club last weekend.
A24’s anticipated conclusion to the Ti West’s ‘X’ trilogy ‘MaXXXine’ opened Friday, placing fourth at the domestic box office with $6.7 million from 2,450 cinemas. For a hard R-rated horror, it’s a decent start, but the real questions will soon be answered: if MaXXXine has the legs to prove a positive box office return. The movie currently holds at a modest 75% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics, and a higher 78% by audiences.
