Danny Boyle’s long awaited sequel to the massively acclaimed ‘28 Days Later’ poses one of the biggest questions: will Cillian Murphy return?

In a recent interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman was asked if Murphy would be part of the already star-studded cast (Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes). In previous weeks it was announced Cillian Murphy would be executive producer for ‘28 Years Later,’ but it was not confirmed if he'd be reprising his lead role from the original film.

Rothman answered: "Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way. This is Danny [Boyle] at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it."

Cillian Murphy and Danny Boyle will reunite, alongside co-writer Alex Garland.

‘28 Days Later’ (2002) was Murphy’s breakout role, and a surprise hit with critics and fans, while being financially profitable ($82 million+ on an $8 million budget). ‘28 Days Later’ is credited with revitalizing the zombie horror genre, which inspired future adaptions and originals films such as; ‘World War Z,’ ‘Zombieland,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ and Zack Snyder’s notable remake of ‘Dawn of the Dead.’

The third and long-awaited instalment ‘28 Years Later’ will release on June 20, 2025 from Sony Pictures.
