It was recently announced that Sydney Sweeney will star in a remake of the 1968 sci-fi ‘Barbarella,’ from Sony Pictures. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in negotiations to pen the screenplay, and new reports suggest that Edgar Wright is currently in talks to direct.

Edgar Wright has reportedly been eyeing the project for some time, meeting with Sydney Sweeney after the reboot was first announced. The studio and Wright have a strong relationship (i.e. ‘Baby Driver’) and Sony is seeking a viscerally creative visual style — which Wright is known for.

Screenwriters Goldman and Ross have helped launch such successful franchises like the rebooted X-Men movies starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, as well as Matthew Vaughn’s ‘The Kingsmen: Secret Service.’ This entails that Sony plans on making ‘Barbarella’ a franchise.

However, the potential director and star are exceptionally busy at the moment; as Sweeney is preparing for a Christy Martin biopic while Wright is readying his Glen Powell-starring reboot of ‘The Running Man.’ It’s safe to say that ‘Barbarella’ will not be in production until 2026 or 2027.
