The much anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel film from visionary director George Miller ‘Furiosa’ premiered last Wednesday night at the Cannes Film Festival.

Australian filmmaker George Miller has now made five Mad Max films over a 45 year span, but none have been as anticipated as Furiosa. Thanks to the high-octane action masterpiece that was Fury Road, ‘Furiosa’ had a big level of hype to live up to. Fury Road is considered one of the greatest action movies of all time and won six Academy Awards.

Miller and his team had already penned the script of ‘Furiosa’ as part of the development process of the character for Fury Road — helping Charlize Theron explore the character on a richer level. This process also included a script for Tom Hardy’s character Max, which detailed the life of the character a year prior to Fury Road.

George Miller gave his comments on the potential for more Mad Max movies: “There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of Fury Road, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before. — That was a tool for the cast and crew. We know the Max story from the year before. I’ll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes, before we even think about it.”

So far, reactions for ‘Furiosa’ have been great from critics and fans. After the premiere screening at Cannes, Furiosa received a seven-minute standing ovation.

Miller also acknowledged he never imagined he’d continue going with the franchise this long. “If you are just repeating what you’ve done, there’s no appetite to do that. — I’ve often wondered, ‘Am I crazy?’ Then I realize I’m driven by my curiosity. I feel that I’m learning.”
