BOX OFFICE UPDATE: ‘Garfield’ Overtakes ‘Furiosa’ In Worldwide Box Office Amid Poor Summer Weekend
The summer box office has started off in dire shape, with the shock of the world being ‘Furiosa’ underperforming globally, and deemed a box-office flop. ‘The Garfield Movie’ has overtaken ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ for first place on domestic and international sales.
The DNEG-animated feature, which stars Chris Pratt, is projecting $13 million in its second weekend domestically. The film has now inched past $41.3 million in North America and $66.5 million internationally. This takes ‘Garfield’ to $108 Million worldwide.
Warner Bros.’ ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ took in only $3 million on Friday. Competitors are projecting a drop of around 59%. With a $168 million production budget to account for, plus marketing and distribution costs, the well-reviewed revenge prequel doesn’t look to be profitable at the end of its theatre-run.
The 2015 predecessor ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ earned $63 million through its first seven days in North America alone, and conjured a global total of $380 Million. ‘Furiosa’ ended its first week way behind at $38.9 million, and holds a global total of $74.8 Million.
‘Furiosa’ is likely to reach the $100 Million global mark in the coming weeks — an unexpected disaster for Warner Bros.
