‘Gladiator II’ Opening Scene Features Ridley Scott’s Biggest Action Sequence Ever

Throughout director Ridley Scott’s 6-decade career, he’s made epic after epic after epic — never afraid to tackle seemingly impossible features such as ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Kingdom Of Heaven,’ ‘Alien,’ ‘Blade Runner,’ and ‘Napoleon.’

Though ‘Napoleon’ was met with poor reviews from audiences and critics alike, the film had several humungous battle sequences — the biggest of Scott’s career — but ‘Gladiator II’ looks to go above and beyond.

“We begin the film with probably the biggest action sequence I’ve ever done,” Ridley Scott said when speaking to Empire. “Probably bigger than anything in Napoleon.”

‘Gladiator II’ is set over 20 years after the events of the first film, following Lucius, Maximums’ son from the first film, who hasn’t been seen in years and is presumed dead — only to return as a Gladiator for vengeance.

From the ‘Gladiator II’ trailer alone, we can see multiple epic battle scenes — one in which involves a Rhino:

“Computerisation and AI — you have to embrace it,” says Scott. “I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino’s body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape. I have this thing that can do 40 miles an hour, spin on the spot, wag its head and snarl. A two-ton rhino with a guy on its back! I mean, it’s a lot of fun.”
