Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ To Receive IMAX Release Prior To Netflix Premiere
Netflix has teamed up with IMAX for the worldwide theatrical release of Greta Gerwig's adaptation of ‘Narnia,’ set to launch two weeks prior to its streaming premiere on Netflix.
The film, an adaptation of C.S. Lewis's iconic fantasy series ‘Chronicles of Narnia,’ is scheduled for an IMAX debut on Thanksgiving Day 2026, followed by a release on Netflix during the Christmas holiday season of the same year. This significant partnership highlights a strategic move for IMAX, which collaborates with Netflix to provide a limited theatrical run for the film.
IMAX will exclusively showcase ‘Narnia’ for two weeks, a duration deemed sufficient to meet the demands of theater chains that host IMAX screens. Under the terms of the deal, Netflix will then hold a four-week exclusive window to stream the film post its theatrical run.
The rights to the film and television adaptations of the C.S. Lewis series were secured by Netflix in 2018, with Gerwig, fresh from her success with ‘Barbie,’ set to direct.
The IMAX collaboration with Gerwig extends her journey into high-budget film production and literary adaptations, following her acclaimed directorial efforts with ‘Lady Bird,’ which earned five Academy Award nominations, and her adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s ‘Little Women’ for Sony.
Gerwig's partnership with IMAX aligns her with renowned directors like James Cameron and Christopher Nolan, who have previously capitalized on the expansive screens offered by IMAX. Nolan's ‘Oppenheimer,’ notably shot with IMAX-certified cameras, achieved substantial box office success alongside ‘Barbie.’
Moreover, both Netflix and IMAX are considering the potential to develop a franchise around ‘Narnia,’ given the series' impressive global book sales of over 115 million copies, and translations into 57 languages.
