Jason Momoa Confirmed To Play Lobo In DC Studios ‘Supergirl’ Movie
Jason Momoa, renowned for his role as Aquaman, will continue his involvement with DC by portraying Lobo in the upcoming film ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’
The Hollywood Reporter has verified that Momoa will assume the role of the extraterrestrial bounty hunter, a character that debuted in comic books in 1983.
Previously, Momoa was a key figure in the Aquaman series under the former DC leadership. He made his debut in the DC Extended Universe with a brief appearance in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), followed by roles in ‘Justice League’ (2017) and the lead in ‘Aquaman’ (2018) — even starring in Zack Snyder’s original vision for Justice League titled; ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021).
‘Aquaman’ was extraordinarily successful, grossing $1 billion and becoming a highlight of the DCEU. However, the sequel, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ (2023), did not perform as well, earning $439 million and receiving poor reviews.
Momoa has expressed interest in playing Lobo for some time, a sentiment he reiterated during promotional events for ‘The Lost Kingdom.’ He recently shared a hopeful quote from those events on Instagram, announcing, "they called," indicating that DC had indeed reached out to him for the role.
The journey to adapt Lobo for film has seen various directors and actors linked to the project, including Guy Ritchie, Brad Peyton, and Dwayne Johnson. Despite these efforts and a flirtation with Michael Bay in 2018, plans to bring Lobo to the big screen never materialized. However, Lobo was portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan in the television series ‘Krypton’ on SyFy.
Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, is known for his blue skin and robust demeanor, featuring super strength and healing abilities. He often finds himself at odds with both heroes and villains.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is slated for release on June 26, 2026, with Milly Alcock playing the title role. This film will be the second in the revamped DC Universe guided by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, following Gunn’s ‘Superman’ film set for July release.
