‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Shatters Records With 68 Million Views, Netflix’s Biggest TV Debut Ever
‘Squid Game’ is back 3 years after its first season, and continues to dominate global viewership. The series' second season has achieved an impressive 68 million views worldwide since its release on December 25 on Netflix.
The launch of the second season has set a new record for Netflix, garnering the most views in its first week than any other series premiere, surpassing the previous record of 50.1 million views held by ‘Wednesday’ in 2022. Within just three days, it has risen to the seventh position on Netflix’s list of All-Time most popular Non-English language series.
However, the second season has not yet surpassed the monumental success of its first season, which is still the most-watched show on Netflix, across all languages. The first season enjoyed 24 weeks in the Global Top 10, making a reappearance this week with an additional 8.1 million views. The resurgence in popularity coincides with the launch of a ‘Squid Game’ mobile game and the ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ reality series last year. Initially aired in September 2021, it remained in the Top 10 for 19 consecutive weeks through January 2022.
The series initially premiered mid-week and didn't catch viral attention until the second week, where it soared to 448 million viewing hours in just one week. This surge helped it achieve a record 265.2 million views and 2.2 billion viewing hours within its first 90 days. The second season faces a challenging journey to match these figures.
Netflix introduced its Top 10 metrics in summer 2021, benefiting ‘Squid Game’ significantly as it highlighted the platform's global influence. Initially, Netflix focused on hours viewed, but it has since adjusted its metrics to emphasize total viewers, irrespective of the duration of the shows or movies.
The current seven-episode run of ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 ends with a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the series finale in late 2025. There are rumors of a potential expansion of the ‘Squid Game’ universe, including an English-language spinoff directed by David Fincher.
Starring Lee Jung-jae and created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series delves into a dystopian scenario where individuals in debt participate in deadly children's games for a chance at a large cash prize. Season 2 continues the story of Seong Gi-hun, the winner from the first season, as he attempts to uncover and stop the enigmatic Front Man behind the games.
