Lady Gaga Talks Negative Reviews For ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’: “People Just Sometimes Don’t Like Some Things”
Months after Lady Gaga’s latest film 'Joker: Folie à Deux' received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office, the star reflected on the experience.
“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” Gaga told Elle in an interview published Tuesday. “It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”
She continued; “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”
The musical sequel, directed by Todd Phillips and featuring Joaquin Phoenix returning in his Oscar-winning role as the DC villain alongside Gaga, was a follow-up to the 2019 film that once held the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie at $1.1 billion. However, the sequel was not well-received, garnering a D by Cinemascore, and opened to a mere $37.6 milion in the U.S. (compared to the first movie's $96.2 million opening), ultimately grossing $58.3 million domestically and $206.4 million worldwide against a $190 million production cost.
Currently, the film has a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been nominated as one of the "worst" movies of the year at the 2025 Razzie Awards, with Gaga herself receiving a nomination for "worst actress."
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ depicts Arthur Fleck, played by Phoenix, confined in Arkham Asylum awaiting trial. The film explores his struggle with his dual identity, discovering true love, and the music within him. The cast also includes Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz, who reprises her role from the first film.
In addition to directing, Phillips co-wrote the screenplay with Oscar nominee Scott Silver. The movie was produced by Phillips, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and Joseph Garner. Gaga contributed as a music consultant, while Michael E. Uslan, Georgia Kacandes, Silver, Mark Friedberg, and Jason Ruder served as executive producers.
