Benny Safdie Teams Up With Christopher Nolan For ‘The Odyssey’
Benny Safdie is set to collaborate once again with Christopher Nolan on Nolan’s upcoming film, 'The Odyssey.’
Safdie, who previously portrayed physicist Edward Teller in Nolan’s Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer,’ is joining a star-studded cast under the Universal Pictures banner that includes notables such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
This new venture is a cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic Greek poem, which Universal announced last December as a “mythic action epic.” The production will span the globe, utilizing innovative Imax film technology, marking the first time Homer’s saga will hit IMAX screens.
The release is scheduled for July 17, 2026.
The classic poem narrates the challenging 10-year voyage of King Odysseus back to Ithaca post-Trojan War, an odyssey fraught with divine interference and mythical creatures, including Cyclopes. The narrative also explores the trials of Odysseus's wife and adult son, who deal with suitors vying for his throne.
Details about the characters and their specific roles remain closely guarded secrets. Universal has opted not to comment on the casting details.
Filming is expected to commence in late February.
Recently, Safdie has been visible onscreen in the 2023 Showtime/A24 series ‘The Curse,’ which he co-wrote and created with Nathan Fielder. He received nominations for an Independent Spirit Award for his acting and a WGA award for his writing in the series.
Safdie also wrapped up his role in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ alongside Adam Sandler and is anticipating the release of his directorial solo debut, ‘The Smashing Machine,’ a biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr featuring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, later this year by A24.
Beyond his noted directorial work alongside his brother, Safdie has developed a substantial acting portfolio that includes appearances in Lionsgate’s ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,’ Claire Denis’ Palme d’Or-nominated ‘The Stars at Noon,’ and Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Licorice Pizza.’
Additionally, he starred and co-directed the A24 film ‘Good Time’ with his brother, Josh, earning an Indie Spirit Award nomination for best supporting actor.
