Madonna Teases Biopic Is Back In The Works, Script Titled ‘Who’s That Girl?’
The Queen of Pop’s biopic is back in the works, nearly a year and a half later from the announcement that the film was canned.
The film was originally penned to span her decades-long career at Universal Pictures, but plans for it fell through in January 2023. Actress Julia Garner was set to star as the pop queen.
In a new Instagram post, Madonna shared a glimpse at the screenplay and a potential title: ‘Who’s That Girl?’ — a nod to her 1987 song and film of the same name. Another details show the words “rewrites by Madonna and ECW,” referring to co-writer Erin Cressida Wilson.
When the project halted, there were many drafts of the script and were reported to always be over 180 pages. There were early conversations about splitting the movie in two or making it a miniseries. After all, 40 years in the business is a hefty feat to tackle in a potentially 3hr film.
Madonna was set to direct the biopic and Julia Garner was the frontrunner to play the Queen of Pop prior to the original cancelation. Other names that auditioned included Florence Pugh, Odessa Young and Alexa Demie.
Madonna had previously said that the film would follow her "struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man's world as a woman, and really just the journey," which ranges from "happy, sad, mad, crazy, good, bad, and ugly,” leading to the making of a superstar.
Universal has not made any official announcements regarding the project.
