Ryan Gosling In Talks For Shawn Levy ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Reports confirm that Ryan Gosling is in discussions to join Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film.
Shawn Levy, alongside Jonathan Tropper, has been developing a ‘Star Wars’ project for two years. The movie, still without a title, is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. This follows another Star Wars installment featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set for May 22, 2026. Tropper has previously collaborated with Levy on the films ‘The Adam Project’ and ‘This Is Where I Leave You.’
Disney counts Levy as a key director, owing to his success with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ under Marvel Studios, which became the highest grossing R-rated film ever, amassing $1.33 billion globally.
Although specifics about the new Star Wars movie by Lucasfilm remain undisclosed, it is known that this film will not be linked to the primary saga of Luke Skywalker, spanning Episodes I-IX, and will stand independently. Production is expected to begin this fall. Additionally, a Star Wars Celebration is set to take place this year in Tokyo, where more information is likely to be revealed.
The most recent Star Wars feature film was ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ released in 2019, which earned $515.2 million domestically and over $1.07 billion worldwide. Following the financial disappointment of ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ which garnered just $213.7 million in the U.S. and less than $330 million globally, Disney shifted its focus from standalone films to developing in-depth series on Disney+. This strategy has led to series such as ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ the latter of which was initially intended as a cinematic release.
If Ryan Gosling joins the Star Wars universe, it could replicate his box office success with ‘Barbie,’ where he contributed to Warner Bros.' highest grossing film, earning $1.44 billion. Gosling is a three-time Oscar nominee, recognized for his roles in ‘Barbie’ (Best Supporting Actor), ‘La La Land’ (Lead Actor), and ‘Half Nelson’ (Lead Actor); while acting in fan favorites like ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017) and ‘Drive’ (2011).
