Ryan Reynolds On Rejected ‘Deadpool 3’ Road-Trip Pitch That Had A Budget Of $5 Million
Ryan Reynolds is finally reprising his role of Deadpool in the third franchise instalment ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ However, it hasn’t been as easy road to get to this point, as during Disney and Fox merger, Reynolds thought he would never be able to play the superhero again.
“I didn’t know if I’d ever be playing Deadpool again,” Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s not something I would’ve said necessarily publicly, but I didn’t know how a character like that would fit into that world [the Marvel Cinematic Universe].”
When Deadpool was given the green light to be established within the MCU, Reynolds had a lot of ideas that were tossed around, including one of “a Rashomon story that had these three different points of view.”
Another idea for the third Deadpool film was a low-budget, indie road trip comedy.
“Literally, it was a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects,” the actor said. “It was just a talkie-talkie road trip with me and [Karan Soni’s character] Dopinder and some of the things we collected and saw along the way. It wasn’t meant to be an event movie. If we’re on our way to Point C, it was meant to just get us to Point B. That was the weirdest one. I liked it. I thought it was kind of fun.”
Of course, those ideas were eventually scrapped, and now Deadpool teams up with a returning Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — which will undoubtedly draw in a huge audience, and potentially be a $1 billion global hit. The budget for this film is far greater than Reynolds’ initial pitch, with a number closer to $300 million.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ opens in internationally on July 26.
