FX’s Japan-set historical adaption ‘Shōgun’ is closer than ever to be renewed for a second season. Star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada recently signed a deal with FX to return as his character Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

The show was planned as a limited series, but after its rave reviews and viewership numbers for the first season, FX is considering moving “Shōgun” into an expanded series.

‘Shōgun’ is FX’s most expensive series to date, costing approximately $250 million. The show's premiere episode earned 9 million views worldwide across Hulu, Disney+, and Star+ during the first six days after its release — the best worldwide debut of any Disney General Entertainment series.

The first TV adaption of ‘Shōgun’ was released in 1980 and was well received among fans and critics. That being said, 2024s adaption seems to expand on deeper themes and cultural importance, leaving fans of the book more satisfied with this faithfull adaption.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the FX/Hulu series sits at an almost perfect 99% critical score, with an audience score of 90%. It also holds an 8.8/10 on IMDb.
