Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis has been spotted in the United Kingdom filming on the set of a new movie with Sean Bean.

UK reports say the secretive project is titled Avelyn, and the production is currently shooting in Manchester.

The Daily Mail was first to report Day-Lewis’ return to acting, saying his role was involved in an “action-packed scene”.

Speculation ensues, as some believe the actor is only back for a small appearance (cameo), rather than a fully realized character.

Day-Lewis retired from acting in 2017. Leslee Dart, the actor’s publicist, issued a statement at the time, saying: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Day-Lewis won Best Actor at the Academy Awards for ‘My Left Foot’ (1990), ‘There Will Be Blood’ (2007), and ‘Lincoln’ (2012).

The 67-year-old actor was active in the industry since 1971, bouncing between theatre and film early in his career. He performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Romeo Montague in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and Flute in ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream.’ His first film was ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ (1971), but started to earn mass appeal and acclaim after his supporting role in ‘Gandhi’ (1982). It was ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ (1985) that Day-Lewis found his stride, and became a significant name in Hollywood.

The actor is rarely seen at events and prefers to keep a low profile. He took part in an event for Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ in January 2024.

Scorsese had hoped to bring the actor out of retirement to make one more film.
