Henry Cavill Confirms ‘Warhammer 40,000’ TV Series Has Entered Development At Amazon
Two years after Amazon MGM Studios acquired global rights to the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ franchise from Games Workshop — an initiative spearheaded by Henry Cavill as both star and executive producer — progress on the ambitious cinematic universe is finally taking shape. The first project, a TV series, has officially entered development.
Insiders reveal that a mini-writers' room was convened to chart the creative direction of the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe. Based on the concepts developed during this phase, the decision was made to launch the franchise with a television series. However, a showrunner has not yet been confirmed, with negotiations reportedly still underway.
The timing aligns with a significant milestone in the agreement between Amazon and Games Workshop. In its July financial report, Games Workshop highlighted that both parties have until December 2024 to finalize “creative guidelines for the films and television series.” This clause ensures Amazon retains the rights initially acquired in December 2022, which were extended for another year in 2023.
Henry Cavill, a long-time fan of ‘Warhammer 40,000,’ shared his excitement about the project's progress on Instagram, emphasizing the care and dedication involved in crafting the universe.
“My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been delving into concept rooms, dissecting the vast scope and grandeur of the Warhammer universe,” Cavill wrote. “We’ve explored countless characters, studied ancient texts, and collaboratively found an exciting starting point for this universe. Our efforts have been endorsed by Amazon and Games Workshop, bringing this dream closer to reality.”
The ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe is set in a dystopian far future, where humanity teeters between greatness and annihilation. Its empire faces countless threats: internal betrayal, hostile alien factions, and the insidious corruption of reality itself by malevolent gods.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso were instrumental in securing the rights to ‘Warhammer 40,000,’ collaborating with Cavill to pitch the concept to Amazon. Vertigo Entertainment is co-producing the project alongside Cavill, Games Workshop’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill, and Amazon MGM Studios.
Cavill, reflecting on the significance of the project when it was first announced, expressed deep personal enthusiasm. “I’ve loved ‘Warhammer’ since I was a child, making this an incredibly meaningful moment for me,” he said. “Guiding this cinematic universe from its foundation is both an honor and a tremendous responsibility.”
This announcement marks the first major step toward bringing the expansive ‘Warhammer 40,000’ world to life on screen, delighting fans eager to see its epic battles and intricate lore translated into a new medium.
