Jude Law On Turning Down Superman Role: “Felt Like a Step Too Far”

Actor Jude Law recently revealed why he turned down an opportunity to portray the iconic Man of Steel on the big screen.

The Oscar-nominated actor recently told The Playlist’s ‘The Discourse’ podcast about once being considered for Superman in a potential film to be directed by Brett Ratner.

“So this is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on,” Jude Law explained. “And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yon-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far. — And it was when Brett Ratner was going to direct, I think. And they didn’t have a script, if I remember rightly. Did they have a script? I don’t remember reading one. This is a long time ago. They brought me the suit. They thought, ‘This might change your mind.’”

Law mentioned that he didn’t feel right wearing the Superman suit, but confirmed that the version of the suit he tried on wasn’t the classic suit Christopher Reeve wore.

Jude Law joined the list of almost-Superman actors, which includes Nicolas Cage, who had a brief cameo in 2023s ‘The Flash’ from DC — which marked the final film of the DCEU.

Now, James Gunn has taken the mantel of DC head, and is crafting his own universe (the DC Universe) from scratch, casting David Corenswet as Superman which is set to be released July 11, 2025.
