Another hiccup for Daisy Ridley’s new Rey-centered ‘Star Wars’ flick: screenwriter Steven Knight, writer of ‘Eastern Promises’ and creator of ‘Peaky Blinders’ has left the project.

Ridley’s Rey follow-up of the sequel ‘Star Wars’ trilogy is reportedly set 15 years after 2019’s ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’

In March 2023, Knight signed onto the project in replacement of screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

Lucasfilm is already on the search for a new screenwriter to tackle the story of Rey forming a new Jedi Order. At this point, production will likely begin early 2026, with Disney aiming for a 2027 release.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct the film (her feature debut). The director has already worked with Disney, helming episodes of the Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel.’ Obaid-Chinoy is most well-known for her 2 Academy Awards for her documentary work on ‘Saving Face’ (2012) and ‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’ (2016).

Knight most recently penned the screenplay for Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maria’ biopic, and is hard at work on a feature film for ‘Peaky Blinders’ at Netflix — which could be a core factor in his departure from the Lucasfilm project.

The new Rey ‘Star Wars’ film was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2023, and will see the popular character form a new Jedi Order 15 years after the events of Episode 9.

It’s currently unknown if any additional cast members from the sequel trilogy will join Daisy Ridley in the untitled new ‘Star Wars’ film.
