The Sublime biopic from Sony’s 3000 Pictures is moving forward, with KJ Apa attached to star as the late Bradley Nowell — the band’s lead singer.

Justin Chon is set to direct direct the untitled project, and is currently penning the script with Bobby Hundreds (after an initial draft from Chris Mundy).

Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready are all producing on behalf of Chenin Entertaiment, while surviving Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson executive produce. The film’s previously attached director, Francis Lawrence, will also serve as executive producer after stepping away from the directing role due to scheduling conflicts.

Sublime hailed from Long Beach, California, and the alternative rock group’s big break landed with their 1996 self-titled, third studio album ‘Sublime,’ released two months after Nowell died of a drug overdose at age 28.

The band still shares archived footage of the lead singer via social media.

The band is known for songs like ‘What I Got,’ ‘Santeria,’ and ‘Badfish.’

Sublime performed at Coachella earlier this year, with the Nowell’s son Jakob Nowell (age 29) making his debut as lead singer.

KJ Apa, who is best known for starring as Archie on the hit CW series ‘Riverdale,’ is confirmed to play Nowell in the biopic. Apa has experince as a musician and singer, releasing original music in the form of a full length album in 2021.
