Amazon is developing a television adaptation of ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’
The series will be based on the novel by Wang Dulu, which is part of the Crane Iron Pentalogy. Jason Ning is attached as writer and executive producer. He will be joined by executive producer Ron D. Moore, who is producing alongside Maril Davis through Tall Ship Productions. Additional executive producers include Johnny Levin, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and Hong Wang and Qin Wang from the Wang Dulu Estate. Ying Lou will serve as co-executive producer. The show will be produced by Sony Pictures Television, where both Ning and Moore have overall deals.
The official logline for the project states: “Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity — caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”
Originally published between 1941 and 1942, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ is one of five books in the series, which also includes ‘Crane Startles Kunlu,’ ‘Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin,’ ‘Sword Force, Pearl Shine’ and ‘Iron Knight, Silver Vase.’
The story has been adapted multiple times for the screen, with Ang Lee’s 2000 film version standing out as the most acclaimed. That adaptation grossed over $200 million worldwide and earned 10 Academy Award nominations.
Ning’s involvement with the series was first hinted at in 2023, when he signed his overall deal. His past credits include ‘The Brothers Sun.’ ‘Mrs. Davis,’ ‘Lucifer,’ and ‘The Expanse.’
