Javier Bardem, fresh off his television debut in Netflix’s ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ is gearing up for another major TV role. The actor is set to star in a new series adaptation of ‘Cape Fear.’ The project has been picked up by Apple TV+ with a full series order.

The series will be written and showrun by Nick Antosca, known for his work on true crime dramas like ‘A Friend of the Family’ and ‘The Act.’ Executive producers for the project include Martin Scorsese, who directed the 1991 version of ‘Cape Fear’ and Steven Spielberg, whose company Amblin Entertainment co-produced the earlier film. Bardem will also serve as an executive producer.

Described as a taut, Hitchcock-inspired thriller, the 10-episode series will explore America's modern fascination with true crime. The storyline centers on married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden, whose lives are turned upside down when Max Cady, a violent criminal from their past played by Bardem, is released from prison.

This latest adaptation draws inspiration from both the 1962 film directed by John Lee Thompson and Scorsese's 1991 remake, both of which were based on the novel ‘The Executioners’ by John D. MacDonald. The iconic role of Max Cady was first portrayed by Robert Mitchum in 1962, followed by Robert De Niro in Scorsese’s version, making it one of cinema’s most memorable villain roles.

Produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin Television, the series will feature Antosca as an executive producer alongside his production partner Alex Hedlund of Eat The Cat. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will also executive produce for Amblin Television. The series is being developed under Antosca’s overall deal with UCP, where he has been based since 2017.

‘Cape Fear’ continues Apple’s trend of working with high-profile creative teams. It reunites Amblin Television with the streamer following their successful World War II drama ‘Masters of the Air,’ and builds on Apple’s collaboration with Scorsese, whose ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ earned critical acclaim. Bardem is also involved in Apple’s upcoming racing feature ‘F1,’ currently in production.
