Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim have joined the cast of a live-action adaptation of the iconic mecha anime.

The three actors will star alongside Henry Cavill and rising talent Daniel Quinn-Toye in the ensemble project, which is set to begin filming in Australia this December.

The film is to be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber for Amazon MGM Studios, off a script he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman.

The film is inspired by the classic Japanese sci-fi anime series ‘Beast King GoLion’ and ‘Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV,’ which were adapted and combined into the popular syndicated show ‘Voltron: Defender of the Universe’ in the mid-1980s. The story revolves around a group of five young pilots who operate robot lions that unite to form the powerful robot, Voltron.

Although specific details about the movie’s plot remain under wraps, Thurber gave fans a glimpse of what to expect during a video message at VoltCon in October, a fan convention in Indianapolis. He said, "We’re staying true to the heart and spirit of ‘Voltron.’ This film will introduce a new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined ‘Voltron’ for live-action, but all the beloved, iconic elements are still there."

Producing the film are Todd Lieberman from Hidden Pictures, Bob Koplar of World Events Productions, Thurber, and David Hoberman from Hobie Films.

Sterling K. Brown recently earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in ‘American Fiction,’ a critically acclaimed dramedy from Amazon MGM, directed by Cord Jefferson. Brown is also set to star in and executive produce Hulu's upcoming drama ‘Paradise,’ created by Dan Fogelman, and will soon begin work on Elegance Bratton’s ‘By Any Means’ alongside Mark Wahlberg. He just wrapped production on the limited series ‘Washington Black’ for Hulu and appeared in Netflix’s sci-fi film ‘Atlas’ with Jennifer Lopez.

Rita Ora, a globally successful singer-songwriter with over 10 billion streams and 13 Top 10 hits in the UK (including four number ones), has expanded her career into acting and television. She has appeared in films like the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ series, ‘Detective Pikachu,’ and Disney’s upcoming ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red,’ and has taken on roles as a host, judge, and panelist on various shows.

Australian actor John Kim currently stars in Prime Video’s reimagining of ‘Cruel Intentions,’ based on the 1999 cult classic. His other credits include the Apple TV+ series ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ with Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, as well as roles in ‘Nancy Drew’ (The CW) and ‘The Librarians’ (TNT). On the big screen, Kim has appeared in Netflix’s romance ‘Purple Hearts’ and Warner Bros.’ thriller ‘The Little Things.’
