Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ premiered at the Sala Grande at the Venice Film Festival tonight. Daniel Craig was in attendance, with the film earning an 11-minute standing ovation from the audience.

‘Queer’ synopsis: Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits. He is driven to pursue a young man named Allerton, who is based on Adelbert Lewis Marker.

The film is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel of the same name. Writer of Guadagnino’s previous feature ‘Challengers,’ Justin Kuritzkes, penned the script.

Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans and David Lowery all star alongside Craig.

Guadagnino explained how he read Burroughs’ original book when he was 17-years-old in Palermo while “dreaming of building worlds through cinema.”

“The profound connection that he was achingly describing on the page between these two characters, particularly Lee, the romanticism of the idea of the adventure and the adventure with someone you want and love. [It] transformed me and changed me forever,” Guadagnino said.

“We just wanted to make it as touching and as real and as natural as we possibly could… Drew’s a wonderful, fantastic, beautiful actor to work with, and we just, we kind of had a laugh. We tried to make it fun,” said lead actor Daniel Craig about intimate scenes shared with actor Drew Droege.

Other popular titles from director Luca Guadagnino include ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Suspiria,’ ‘Bones and All,’ and ‘Challengers.’

It’s been revealed that A24 has taken U.S. rights to ‘Queer,’ with a North American premiere looming at TIFF.
