Tom Cruise Developing ‘Days Of Thunder’ Sequel for Paramount
Tom Cruise is reportedly exploring the idea of a sequel to one of his earlier action films, and it’s not the one you might expect.
Cruise is in discussions with Paramount about creating a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR-themed movie ‘Days of Thunder.’
This is surprising considering ‘Days of Thunder’ was not a box office hit or well-received, learning $157 million globally on a $60 million budget, and it received a lukewarm reception from critics (currently floating at 38% from Rotten Tomatoes critics).
After successfully reviving 'Top Gun’ with 2022's hit ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ Cruise is looking to breathe new life into 'Days of Thunder’ in a similar way.
The original ‘Days Of Thunder’ was a Paramount production like ‘Top Gun,’ overseen by producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Tony Scott.
Paramount once explored the idea of rebooting ‘Days of Thunder’ as a TV series for Paramount+, but Cruise turned down the idea as he intends to keep all his work for the big screen.
Several factors will determine if the sequel moves forward, including the script, which Paramount is currently seeking writers for, and Cruise’s packed schedule. The 62-year-old actor is soon to begin work on director Alejandro Iñárritu’s next film for Warner Bros./Legendary, and developing a space-set project with Doug Liman for Universal, while chipping away on a sequel to ‘Maverick’ — a studio priority.
“He’s in talks with Paramount about both Top Gun and Days of Thunder,” a source at Paramount studio revealed. “It really comes down to which script comes together first. It’s all about the idea and, ultimately, the script.”
Cruise reportedly has final approval over all scripts for his projects.
The insider at Paramount continued: “I don’t think a Days of Thunder sequel is a bad idea. People once thought revisiting Top Gun was a bad idea too. You can’t rule it out.”
With Cruise’s eye for filmmaking and thrilling the audience, he’ll adopt similar methods and technology tactics used for ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ should the ‘Days Of Thunder’ sequel be greenlit.
