Tom Cruise To Star In Doug Liman’s Upcoming Supernatural Thriller ‘Deeper’
Tom Cruise has been confirmed to star in ‘Deeper,’ a supernatural thriller currently in early development under director Doug Liman. The news was shared by Liman during a conversation with Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman at a recent screening of the documentary ‘Gaucho Gaucho’ in New York City.
Liman expressed his excitement about venturing into the horror genre, stating, "I’ve never made a scary movie before, and neither has Tom.” The filmmaker indicated his desire to explore new creative territory at this point in his career.
Although ‘Deeper’ has been rumored as Liman’s next project, its exact production timeline remains unclear. Sources confirmed to Deadline that the film is in development at Warner Bros.
The story centers on an astronaut who discovers a menacing and mysterious force during a deep dive into an uncharted underwater trench. The project has been in development for nearly a decade, having originally been set up at MGM in 2016 after the studio acquired Max Landis’s spec script. Initially, Bradley Cooper was slated to star, with Kornél Mundruczó directing. Later iterations involved Idris Elba and director Baltasar Kormákur, though none of these versions moved forward.

‘Deeper’ will mark the third collaboration between Cruise and Liman, following ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and ‘American Made.’ The duo is also working on an ambitious NASA film involving SpaceX, which aims to be shot partially in outer space and is still in development.
Cruise has been keeping busy with other high-profile projects. Recently, he began discussions about a potential sequel to the 1990 NASCAR drama ‘Days of Thunder’ for Paramount Pictures.
Following his work on ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ (the sequel set to hit theaters next summer), he is also slated to start filming a new Alejandro G. Iñárritu project for Warner Bros and Legendary, though details about that film remain scarce.
Liman, meanwhile, has been riding a wave of success. His ‘Road House’ remake, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, achieved a record-breaking debut for Amazon MGM Studios, and his heist film ‘The Instigators,’ featuring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, is already spawning sequels.
