The title for Tom Cruise’s eighth (and potentially final) ‘Mission: Impossible’ film has been officially unveiled, along with the release of its first trailer.

‘The Final Reckoning’ was initially set to be Part Two of 2023’s ‘Dead Reckoning’ but now stands on its own. It is slated for release on ‘May 23, 2025.’ Originally scheduled for 2022, the film faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors strike.

Cruise revealed the film’s title and a new poster on Monday, adding the caption, “Every choice has led to this.”

The trailer teases a series of high-octane stunts, featuring Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt scuba diving near a wrecked submarine, flying and falling from a biplane, and, of course, plenty of running. Fans will also be excited to see Angela Bassett return as CIA Director Erika Sloane, a role she last portrayed in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ alongside franchise villain favorite Henry Cavill.

In ‘Dead Reckoning,’ Ethan Hunt battled a rogue AI program known as The Entity, which was capable of predicting his every move and posed a global threat if captured. After narrowly surviving a catastrophic train crash at the end of the film, Ethan discovers that The Entity is hidden aboard an old Russian submarine. However, his old nemesis, Gabriel (played by Esai Morales), is also on the hunt for it.

Morales will reprise his role in ‘The Final Reckoning’ alongside returning cast members Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma. New faces joining the franchise include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.

Christopher McQuarrie returns as director and co-writer, having previously helmed ‘Rogue Nation,’ ‘Fallout,’ and ‘Dead Reckoning.’ He has a long history of collaboration with Cruise, including the ‘Jack Reacher’ films and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ The script is penned by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller, and Erik Jendresen. Cruise and McQuarrie also serve as producers, with Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger, and Susan Novick as executive producers, and Gina Hallas as co-producer.
