Tom Holland Says ‘Spider-Man 4’ Script “Needs Work” But Is A Story “Worthy Of The Fans’ Respect”
Tom Holland revealed during an interview on the ‘Rich Roll Podcast’ that he recently read a draft for the untitled ‘Spider-Man 4’ movie with co-star and girlfriend Zendaya, saying “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.”
Director of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton is likely to helm the project, taking over from Jon Watts, who directed the three Tom Holland-led Spiderman films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Holland explained the challenges of fitting the film into the MCU: “One of the things is that, with Marvel, your film is a small cog in a large machine. That machine has got to keep running. You have to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture. That’s one of the challenges we’re facing. The time in which we need to get that done is a tall order but definitely achievable with the people we have working on it now.”

The actor has previously played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017), ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019) and the mega-successful ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021) — which saw the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their own versions of the iconic superhero.
Holland made his Spiderman debut in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016), before starring in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
The ending to 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ had Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange redo a spell that Peter accidentally created, causing the world to forget his identity as both Spiderman and Peter Parker in order to save it. This includes his two closest friends MJ and Ned (Jacob Batalon).
“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland told the Critics Choice Association press last November. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”
Holland continued: “I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
