James Wan, creator of the iconic Saw and Conjuring franchises, is developing a remake on Universal’s classic 1954 monster-horror; ‘Creature From the Black Lagoon.’

Wan and team recently presented a pitch to Universal, leading to the current process of hiring a writer. Wan is also in talks to direct the feature while serving as producer.

After spending time at DC with ‘Aquaman’ and his most recent 2023 pic ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ Wan is diving back into the horror genre (in which he’s known for). His prior horror flick was 2021s ‘Malignant.’

Creature from the Black Lagoon’ (1954) is a landmark achievement in Universal’s history, contributing to the development of the sci-fi genre through blending horror with fantasy and romance, alongside captivating storytelling. The film also innovated the cinematic experience with the use of 3D (originally projected by the polarized light method) — despite the false knowledge that 3D is a modern invention.

Prior to Wan’s development on the remake, the character of The Creature was to be included in Universal’s planned Dark Universe, which was to be a franchise of classic monster movie remakes from Universal’s iconic catalog. However, ‘The Mummy’ (2017) ended up being the only official film in the planned universe as the film didn’t attract enough audiences to theatres, and the universe failed to gain momentum (though, we still think it’s a great idea — one film cannot justify an entire franchise failing without even trying).

Wan’s ‘Creature From the Black Lagoon’ will be a modernized retelling of the 1954 classic, and described as a “visceral horror” feature.
