Sony Pictures has announced that the live-action adaptation of ‘The Legend of Zelda,’ a popular video game series, will hit theaters on March 26, 2027. The film is a collaborative production between Sony and Nintendo, and was first revealed in November 2023. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Zelda series, is on-board as a producer alongside Avi Arad.

The announcement of the release date came via Nintendo’s newly launched app, Nintendo Today, following the initial reveal of the film over a year ago on social media by Miyamoto.

“I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” Miyamoto wrote at the time of the announcement. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

Wes Ball (‘The Maze Runner,’ ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’) is set to direct the film. Ball will also serve as a producer with Joe Hartwick Jr. under their Oddball Entertainment label. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo are co-financing the film, with the latter providing the bulk of the financial investment. Details regarding the cast and the storyline are still being finalized.

The decision to produce a ‘Zelda’ film followed the success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ an animated film by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment that was released in April 2023. This film was a commercial success, grossing over $1.3 billion globally and becoming the 18th highest-grossing film worldwide.
