‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ Canceled At Disney+

Lucasfilm have announced that there will be no continuation for showrunner Leslye Headland’s Star Wars series ‘The Acolyte.’

The news may be surprising to few, as the show prevailed with critics but fans had other opinions. This was further confirmed with streaming numbers throughout the eight-episode series, as each one after the other took a significant dip in ratings and viewership — with exception of the season finale.

For Disney (fan reviews aside), the viewership drop could’ve been quite jarring, as the show leapt to a strong start with 4.8 million views on the first day of streaming.

This initial numbers resulted in Disney+ ranking ‘The Acolyte’ as the biggest series premiere on the streamer for 2024.

Disney+ (much like its competitors) has a high viewership median that signifies whether or not a series will be renewed. In regards to ‘The Acolyte,’ the ratings, viewership fizzle and the fact that the series cost $180 million to make, were all red flags for Disney not to continue with season two.

The inflated budget was a concern for many audiences, as the quality of the show [visuals and writing] did not justify the cost. For example, HBO’s ‘House Of The Dragon’ cost less that the Disney+ show at $130 million — with each dollar being clearly visible in all areas of the show.

The cast of ‘The Acolyte’ included Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.
