Visionary director Nicolas Winding Refn will be returning to helm his first film since 2016s ‘Neon Demon.’ Other notable works from the director include the ‘Pusher’ trilogy and ‘Drive.’

Production of Refn’s latest film will shoot entirely in Tokyo and begin principal photography in 2025. The feature is an original story and the plot is currently under wraps — though Refn recently said the movie “will have a lot of glitter and lot of sex and violence.”

The Danish filmmaker is currently in attendance at the Venice Film Festival for the world premiere of his short film ‘Beauty Is not a Sin,’ for Italian motorcycle brand MV Agusta. He will also be attending a screening of his 1996 classic and feature debut movie, ‘Pusher,’ for Venice Classics selections.

Refn touched up on his words about cinema being “dead” a few years back, as he returns to filmmaking, “eager” to re-experience the process of creating.

“It’s a really interesting time to make movies because it’s such a chaotic situation,” Refn said. “So going back and making a theatrical feature film again is almost like — not starting over — but with all the changes in our societies in the last five years and technology changes, it almost seems like the right thing to do for me.”

The director also teased that the movie will continue certain themes and characters inspired by his last features, ‘Only God Forgives’ and ‘The Neon Demon.’ Refn will undoubtedly return to his neo-noir aesthetic with graphic violence as seen in other films like ‘Drive.’

‘Only God Forgives’ and ‘The Neon Demon’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in-competition in 2013 and 2016.
