Sophie Turner is close to securing the lead role in Amazon’s upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ series — a deal has not been finalized.

Turner will portray the iconic character Lara Croft, the daring adventurer from the ‘Tomb Raider’ franchise. The series, which was greenlit by Amazon earlier this year, is being written and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge as part of her overall deal with the platform. News of the project first surfaced in January 2023.

If confirmed, Turner will join a prestigious group of actresses who have taken on the role of Lara Croft, originally from the popular ‘Tomb Raider’ video game series. Angelina Jolie famously brought the character to life in two early 2000s films, followed by Alicia Vikander in a 2018 reboot.

Turner rose to fame playing Sansa Stark in HBO’s iconic series ‘Game of Thrones,’ a role that earned her an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2019. She has also starred as Jean Grey in Fox’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’ More recently, Turner appeared in the ITV/CW series ‘Joan’ and the HBO Max limited series ‘The Staircase.’

The new Tomb Raider series is part of a partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, under a first-look deal with dj2 Entertainment, to expand the Tomb Raider universe across multiple formats, including series and films.

Along with Waller-Bridge, the series' executive producers include Jenny Robins of Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson of dj2 Entertainment, and Michael Scheel. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are involved as consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The show is being produced by Crystal Dynamics, Amazon MGM Studios, and Legendary Television.

More details in come.
